What is the density of an object
A substances mass per unit volume
What are the 3 states of matter
Solid, liquid, gas
Solid structure
-strong forces of attraction hold the particles close together in a fixed, regular arrangement
-the particles don’t have much energy so vibrate on their fixed spot
-density it highest in this state
Liquid structure
-… forces of … between …
-particles can … past eachother and form … arrangements
-they have more … than particles in a …
-they move in … directions at low …
-… dense than …
-weaker forces of attraction between particles
-particles can move past eachother and form irregular arrangements
-they have more energy than particles in a solid
-they move in random directions at low speeds
-less dense than solids
Gases structure
-almost … forces of … between …
-particles have … energy than in … or solids
-they are … to move in … directions at … speeds
-… dense than …
-almost no forces of attraction between particles
-particles have more energy than in liquids or solids
-they are free to move in random directions at high speeds
-less dense than liquids
Density of a solid practical

- Use the formula ρ=… to find the …
- Equipment list: Eureka can, mass balance, measuring cylinder, solid object, string, ruler
- Use a mass balance to find the mass of the object
- If it’s irregular, fill a eureka can to the brim and place a measuring cylinder under the pipe out of the can
- Tie a piece of string to the object and slowly lower it into the eureka can
- Once fully submerged measure the volume of the water displaced in the measuring cylinder to find the volume
- Use the formula ρ=m/v to find the density
How to find the density of a liquid practical
- Equipment list: measuring cylinder, mass balance
- Place a measuring cylinder on a balance and zero it
- Pour 10ml of the liquid into the measuring cylinder and record the mass
- Pour another 10ml into the cylinder and repeat until it is full and record the total volume and mass each time
- For each measurement use the formula ρ=m/v
- Take an average of your calculated densities to find the density if the liquid
