(5 cards)
Spits
They are formed by waves consisting of a long narrow accumulation of sand or shingle, lying generally in line with the coast, with one end attached to the land the other projecting into the sea or across the mouth of an estuary
Tombolo
Feature comprising sand or gravel beach sediment developed by diffraction, refraction and longshore drift to form a ‘neck’ of land connecting a coast to an offshore island or breakwater
Alluvium
It is a deposit of clay, silt, and sand left by flowing floodwater in a river valley or delta
Amenity Value
The pleasantness or attractiveness of a place
Backshore
The part of the beach lying between the foreshore and coastline. The backshore is dry under normal conditions, is often characterised by berms and is without vegetation. The backshore is only exposed to waves under extreme events with high tide and storm surge.
