What is depression?
A mental disorder characterized by low mood and/or lacks interest in their usual activities (low energy)
What is major depressive disorder?
Severe but short-term depression
What is persistent depressive disorder?
long term or recurring depression
What is disruptive mood deregulation disorder?
Childhood temper tantrums
What is premenstrual dysphoric disorder?
disruption to mood prior to and/or during menstruation
What are the three behaviour categories of depression?
- activity levels
- aggression & self harm
- disruption to sleep and eating behaviour
Describe activity levels
- reduces levels of energy effects social life
- psychomotor agitation (struggle to relax/ pacing)
Describe disruption to sleep and eating behaviour
- reduced sleep (insomnia) or increased need for sleep (hypersomnia)
- appetite may increase or decrease (weight gain/loss)
Describe aggression and self- harm
- May become verbally or physically aggressive e.g. ending relationship
- physical aggression directed on the self e.g. suicide attempts
What are the three emotional characteristics of depression?
- Low mood
- Lowered self-esteem
- anger

What are three cognitive characteristics of depression?
- poor concentration
- attention to and dwelling on the negative
- absolutist thinking

unable to stick to a task or find it hard to make decisions

more likely to recall unhappy events and pay more attention to negative aspects of a situation
