What is an affective disorder

Strong emotions which influence a persons ability to function normally

What are the types

- Major Depressions: episode of depression that occurs suddenly. REACTIVE or ENDOGENOUS
- Manic Depression: changing between 2 extreme moods. Occur in regular cycle. MANIA followed by DEPRESSION

What are the ICD-10 characteristics (11)

- Depressed mood
- Loss of interests
- Reduced energy
- marked tiredness after little effort
- Reduced concentration & attention
- Reduced self confidence
- Ideas of guilt
- Pessimistic views of the future
- Ideas or acts of self harm
- Disturbed Sleep

What are the DSM-IV characteristics (6)

- Insomnia
- Fidgeting
- Tiredness
- Feelings of guilt
- Less ability to concentrate
- Recurrent thoughts of death
