What is depression?
A mood disorder
What is major depressive disorder?
common and severe
What is premenstural dysphoric disorder?
Mood disruption prior to and/or during menstruation. Severe PMS that affects everyday life.
What is postpartum depression?
women who experience major depression after (or before) childbirth that can last weeks or months
What is seasonal affective disorder?
a period of major depression that usually happens during winter months
What are the diagnostic tools commonly used?
DSM-V and ICD-11
What is comorbidity?
when one or more disorders occurs alongside the original
Name the symptoms where five of them must be present in order to diagnose major depressive disorder (DSM)
depressed mood
loss of interest
5% weight/appetite loss or gain not linked to dieting
insomnia or hypersomnia
psychomotor agitation
fatigue or loss of energy
negative thoughts and feelings of worthlessness
difficulty concentrating or making decisions
recurrent thoughts of death (ideation or planned)
What are the conditions for diagnosing major depressive disorder?
- five or more symptoms present during same 2 week period and represent a change from previous functioning - at least one of these symptoms is depressed mood or loss of interest
- an impairment or significant distress in social, occupational or other areas of life
- the episode is not related to substances or medical condition
What are the three types of characteristics for depression?
behavioural, emotional, cognitive
Give examples of behavioural characteristics of depression
lethargy or fatigue
insomnia/hypersomnia
psycho-motor agitation
aggression and irritability
self harm
loss of interest
weight change
Give examples of emotional characteristics of depression
lowered mood
low self esteem
recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation with or without intent
