Magistrates Court.

A
  • Jurisdiction to hear all summary offences, some triable-either-way depending on sentencing powers.
  • First hearing of indictable offences before Crown Court.
  • All preliminary hearings held here.
  • Bail Act 1975 (Legal rep, funding, bail applications).
  • Have powers to refuse bail to defendants
  • Power to sentence up to 6 months, up to £5000 fine.
  • Grant search/arrest warrants

  • Unlimited sentencing powers (Sentencing Council Guidelines).
