A
- Jurisdiction to hear all summary offences, some triable-either-way depending on sentencing powers.
- First hearing of indictable offences before Crown Court.
- All preliminary hearings held here.
- Bail Act 1975 (Legal rep, funding, bail applications).
- Have powers to refuse bail to defendants
- Power to sentence up to 6 months, up to £5000 fine.
- Grant search/arrest warrants

A
- Jurisdiction to hear triable-either-way and indictable offences.
- Unlimited sentencing powers (Sentencing Council Guidelines).
- Judge sits alone for guilty plea, jury involved if not guilty plea.
- Can hear appeals from Magistrates Court
