Q

What is line in design

A

A line is a mark between two points. There are various types of lines, from straight to squiggly to curved and more. Lines can have a wide range of purposes: stressing a word or phrase, connecting pieces of content together, creating patterns, separating design elements and components and much more.

Q

What is colour in design

A

Colour is one of the hardest elements to harness, and probably one of the most challenging to understand. The basics, however, are relatively easy. Colour can help the organization of a design, and give emphasis to specific areas or actions. Colour does not necessarily be present in design.

Q

What is shape in design

A

A shape is two dimensional object that stands out from the space around it because of a defined or implied boundary. Shapes can be consistent to add meaning to websites and different shapes are familiar to many users. e.g. buttons are rectangles, icons are normally squares with rounded corners or circles.

Q

What is texture in design

A

Texture is the way a surface feels, or the way its perceived to feel. There are two types of texture: tactile and visual, Visual is the only form that exists in digital design. Tactile textures are three-dimensional and can be touched. The easiest example is tree bark. When you touch bark, you can feel all the bumps and ridges, the roughness and smoothness. A photo of the same bark would be a visual texture. You can see it, not feel it.

Q

What is tone in design

A

Tone is the ‘value’ of a colour. We speak about tone when we discuss ‘light’ and ‘dark’. Pictures can be made entirely from tone, without colour. This is the nature of a black and white photograph. Tone can: be used to represent things, objects, people or places in descriptive or symbolic ways. Communicate emotions, feelings or ideas. Appeal to our senses. Be used for practical purposes.

Q

What is form in design

A

Forms are three dimensional, and there are two types: geometric (man-made) and natural (organic). A digital or physical form can be measured by height, width, and depth. A form can be created by combining shapes, and it can be enhanced by colour or texture. Depending on their usage, they can also be ornate or utilitarian. For digital design, think of form as the object you’re designing for a mobile device, the phone is your form.

Q

What is proportion in design

A

Proportion is the relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one another. Proportion refers to the relative size of parts of a whole (elements within and object). We often think of proportions in terms of size relationships within the human body.
