1
Q

What is an independent groups design ?

A

When 2 separate groups of participants experience 2 different independent variables all participants experience one level of the IV only.
the results of the 2 groups will then be compared

Q

What are the advantages of matched pairs design ?

A

No order effects

reduces individual differences as the groups are matched on all the important requirements.

Q

What are the disadvantages of matched pairs design ?

A

time consuming to get pairs

perfect matches are difficult to achieve

Q

What is a repeated measures design ?

A

All Participants experience both conditions of the experiment.
each participant would first experience condition A the experimental condition. Each participant would then later be tested again in condition B the control condition
The 2 sets of data from both conditions would be compared to see if there was a difference.

Guarantes we are comparing like with like.

Q

What is a matched pairs design ?

A

Participants are paired together on a variable relevant to the experiment.
One participant from each pair would be allocated to a different condition of the experiment.

This is an attempt to control participant variables.

Q

What is randomisation ?

A

To reduce the chance of the researcher having any influence on the results of his study ( no investigator effects )

Q

What are the advantages of independent group design ?

A

No order effects of practice or boredom

most widely used as there is no marching required and no problem of order

Q

What are the disadvantages of independent groups design ?

A

Individual differences of the participants in the group

it might be that the groups you have put together , one of them might have individuals with better traits eg memory

Q

What are the advantages of repeated measures design ?

A

Individual differences between participants are removed because it is the same person in each group.

fewer participants required

Q

What are the disadvantages of repeated measures design?

A

Order effects can occur

they may perform better in a second condition because of practice or worse because of boredom.

this can fixed by counter balancing

it can’t always be used because once you have taken part in one condition you can’t do the other.
once you have learnt one you can’t learn another
