Armand’s love for Desirée is dependent on her outward beauty. Simile shows Armand’s love for Desirée is quite violent. The word choice of ‘avalanche’ has connotations of being sudden, powerful and overwhelming, much like Armand and his love for Desirée - he falls hard and fast and his love is paralysing to recieve (i.e him buying her gifts to ‘win’ her love.) Shows Armand’s character to be powerful and overbearing, foreshadowing his harmful nature and actions towards Desirée later.
