what happened in chapter 1?
Rufus wrote “CAIUS IS A DUMBBELL” on a writing tablet because caius was poking him with a stylus. Caius called Rufus the son of a coward, so Rufus charged at him. They got into a big fight and Xantippus got really mad. He got so mad that he expelled Rufus.
what happened in chapter 2?
The boys showed up @ school and Xantippus wasn’t there. They decided to brainstorm where he might be and Antonius brought up Lukos. They talked about hime and what he did, then they heard a muffled groan coming from the alcove in the back of the classroom the Xantippus lived in.
what happened in chapter 3?
-The boys discussed whether or not to open the “groaning
wardrobe”.
-Mucius nervous opened the wardrobe door
-Xantippus was lying in it with his hands tied up and a rag
in his mouth
-The boys untied him and he said “I was assaulted last
night!”
what happened in chapter 4?
-Xantippus was untied and he told the boys what had
happened the night before
-He told them to clean his room to see if anything was
missing
-Xantippus told the boys they would have a vacation until
his leg healed
-the boys found the words “CAIUS IS A DUMBBELL” written
in RED PAINT on the wall of the Temple of Minerva
what happened in chapter 5?
-the boys came to a conclusion and decided that Rufus
must been the one to desecrate the temple
-Claudia-Caius’s sister- comes out and tells them that her
dad(Senator Vinicius) is really mad about the desecration
-Mucius tells everyone that they need to help Rufus hide,
so he comes up with a plan
-the boys go to Rufus’s house and tell him to go into hiding,
but he refuses and swears that he didn’t do it
what happened in chapter 6?
-Rufus gave them an example of his handwriting, so they
could compare it to the writing on the wall
-Antonius and Publius went the the Temple of Minerva
to compare the writing
-they came back and told them that it matched, so Mucius
told Rufus to run away; he said NO
-the boys go to Xantippus’s apartment and ask him where
the old writing tablet; it was stolen, then they found a
gold chain, it belonged to the burglar
what happened in chapter 7?
-Xantippus explains the chain w/ hieroglyphics on it and
thread hanging, which came off the burglar’s rain cloak
-9 a.m. there is a large crowd in front of the big building
they were looking at a newspaper

what happened in chapter 8?
-the boys get out of the crowd and decide to talk to
Senator Vinicius
-the boys get to Vinicius’s house, but the doorkeeper won’t
let them in-Claudia will!
-the boys tell senator vinicius about their theory on the
writing, and he calls Scribonus (a handwriting expert)
-Scribonus come and claims that the handwriting is genuine
what happened in chapter 9?
-Vinicius drags Claudia along with him and the boys
hurry to go tell Rufus
-when they got there, Livia(Rufus’s mother) was sitting in
the living room crying because Rufus was arrested
-the boys went to Rufus’s room to get their school stuff, and
they found a bundle of wet clothes under his bed
-Livia was told that Rompus was on his way back with some
very important news

-Rompus tells Livia that her husband won his next battle

-Rompus tells everyone that Rufus was out all night and

-the boys gathered as much money as they could and
headed to Lukos’s house
-they told Lukos that they needed to know who the gold

-Lukos “blew up” and they ran all the way to the Forum;
when they go there, they couldn’t find Mucius anywhere
-Mucius climbed out a trapdoor and fell into the ∫å†˙ß øƒ

-Mucius found a trap door in Lukos’s house and escaped
through it
-Mucius jumped from Lukos’s roof to the flat roof of the

-he fell through the roof and landed in a pool of water with
a strong current; it carried him a long way until he figured
out he was in the ∫å†˙ßøƒ∂ˆå˜å
-the bath water finished draining and Mucius got out; he
was really tired, so he used Rufus’s cloak as a pillow and
he fell asleep on a bench
what happened in chapter 13?
-the superintendent came and woke Mucius up by yelling “I
caught you this time!”
-Mucius told him he hadn’t been in the pool the night
before and the man mocked him
-Mucius told him that he was the son of Marius Domitius,
the Tribune, and the man’s attitude changed
-the man let Mucius go, and he ran out to tell the boys
everything
