USSR invasion of Afghanistan- The soviets invaded Afghanistan and replaced President Amin with Babrak Karmal. This kicks started conflict with the Mujahedin.

The solidarity Crisis- Polish government recognised Solidarity as an independent trade union. Following an alarming growth in membership, martial law was declared and solidarity was outlawed in 1982.
