Determinism vs Free Will Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is free will?
The notion that humans can make their own choices and aren’t determined by internal or external forces.
What is determinism?
The notion that an individual’s behaviour is shaped or controlled by internal or external forces.
What are the five types of determinism?
- Hard.
- Soft.
- Biological.
- Environmental.
- Psychic.
What is hard determinism?
Behaviour is shaped or controlled by internal or external forces.
What is soft determinism?
Humans have free will but some behaviour is shaped or controlled by internal or external forces.
What is biological determinism?
The notion that behaviour is caused by biological influences that we cannot control.
What is environmental determinism?
The notion that behaviour is caused by features of the environment that we cannot control.
What is psychic determinism?
The notion that behaviour is caused by dictated forces that we cannot control.
What is double-determinism?
When two or more forces shape or control behaviour.
What is the causal explanation?
Determinism displays that all behaviour has a cause and can be controlled within a scientific study.
What is a limitation of hard determinism?
- Not consistent in how the legal system works.
- If people cannot be held accountable for aggressive behaviour, there would be no basis for a conviction.
What is limitation of free will?
Soon et al. (2008) demonstrated that the brain activity that determines the outcome of simple choices may predate our knowledge of having made a choice.
