Development
The use of resources to improve the standard of living of a nation
Economic development
The total value of goods and services provided/income of a country
Social development
Improvement in quality of life, social well-being, equality and social justice
Political development
The levels of democracy and freedom of speech
Birth rate
Number of live births per 1000 people per year
GDP per capita
The value of a country’s final income in a year, divided by its population. It reflects the average income of a country’s citizens
Life expectancy
The average lifespan of someone born in that country
Death rate
The number of deaths occurring per 1000 people per year
People per doctor
The number of doctors shared per 1000 people
Natural increase
Measure of how population is changing (usually increasing so called natural increase). Calculated by calculating birth rate-death rate
Fertility rate
The average number of births per woman
Infant mortality rate
The number of children that die before their first birthday
HDI
A combined indicator which uses GDP per capita, Literacy Rate and Life Expectancy to produce a number between 0 and 1 to illustrate development
Measures of inequality
Shows how wealth is spread through a population. It identifies the percentage of GDP owned by the wealthiest 10% and the poorest 10%
Demographic
The structure of populations
Dependency ratio
The amount of people who work and are less dependent
Income quintiles
Used to show the global inequality of people’s income split into 5 20% of the richest to poorest
Terms of trade
The value of a country’s exports relative to that of its imports
Landlock
No port from which to export or import goods
