Affluence
The general level of prosperity enjoyed by a population
Bottom Up
Aid usually given by charities and NGOs without any government interference, directly to the people who need it most
Demographic Transition Model
A generalisation about how populations change over time based upon the experience of developed countries
Dependency Theory
The theory that suggests low levels of development in poorer countries results from the control of the global economy by rich countries
Deprivation
When the standard of living and quality of life fall below a minimum level
Development
The progress of a country in terms of economic growth, the use of technology and human welfare
Fairtrade
A social movement whose stated goal is to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions
Free Trade
When trade between countries is not restricted by for example import duties or not being a member of a group of trading nations
Gini Index
A measure of inequality used to analyse the distribution of wealth or income among the citizens of a country
Gross Domestic Product
The total value of goods and services produced by a country during a year. When expressed as per capita it provides a widely used measure of national prosperity and development
Human Development Index
life expectancy (a social measure), education (average number of years of schooling and expected years of schooling– a social measure) and gross national income per capita (an economic measure).
Human welfare
The general condition of a population in terms of diet, housing, healthcare, education etc
Index of Corruption
An indicator that scores each country on how corrupt their government is as judged by Transparency International
Infrastructure
Transport networks and the water, sewage and communication systems that are vital to people, businesses and settlements
International Aid
The transfer of money, goods & expertise to assist developing countries to help improve the quality of life.
Periphery
an area remote or isolated from a centre of a country. It generally lags in terms of development and influence.
Top down
Aid usually given to the government of the developing country so that they can spend it on the projects that they need
Standard of Living
Standard of living refers to the level of wealth, comfort, material goods and necessities available to a certain group of people in a certain geographic area.
Quality of Life
quality of life is a qualitative measure that evaluates the general well-being of individuals and societies and relates to factors such as the right to freedom, the right to marry and freedom from discrimination.
Trade barrier
A government impose restraint on the international flow of goods and services. The most common form of a barrier is a tariff or tax on imports.
Transnational corporation
A large company that operates in a number of countries and often involved in a variety of economic activities.
