What screening tests for DDH? When?

A

Barlow test: attempt to dislocate an articulated femoral head posteriorly

Ortolani test: Attempt to relocate the femoral head into the acetabulum on abduction

Routine examination of the newborn and repeat at 8 weeks routine surveillance

How is DDH managed?

A

Most unstable hips will spontaneously stabilise by 3-6 weeks
Pavlik harness (dynamic flexion-abduction orthosis - keeps hip flexed and abducted) in children younger than 4-5 months
Older children may require surgery - get orthopaedic input
