What are risk factors for DDH?
Female Breech presentation FHx Firstborn child Oligohydramnios Birth weight > 5 kg Congenital calcaneovalgus foot deformity
What screening tests for DDH? When?
Barlow test: attempt to dislocate an articulated femoral head posteriorly
Ortolani test: Attempt to relocate the femoral head into the acetabulum on abduction
Routine examination of the newborn and repeat at 8 weeks routine surveillance
What is DDH?
Spectrum of disorders ranging from dysplasia to sublimation to frank dislocation of the hip
How is diagnosis of DDH confirmed?
USS
How is DDH managed?
Most unstable hips will spontaneously stabilise by 3-6 weeks
Pavlik harness (dynamic flexion-abduction orthosis - keeps hip flexed and abducted) in children younger than 4-5 months
Older children may require surgery - get orthopaedic input
