DH100: Chapter 14: The periodontium Flashcards
(43 cards)
clinical treatment procedure are applied.
clinical crown
periodontal fibers are attached.
clinical root
part of tooth covered by enamel
anatomical crown
tooth covered by cementum
anatomic root
lining of the oral cavity, a mucous membrane composed of connective tissue covered with stratified squamous epithelium
oral mucosa
covers the gingiva and the hard palate, areas most used during the mastication of food.
masticatory mucosa
covers the inner surface of the lips and cheeks, floor of the mouth, underside of tongue, soft palate and alveolar mucosa.
lining mucosa
covers the dorsum of tongue. Composed of many papillae. Contain taste buds.
specialized mucosa
threadlike keratinized elevations cover the dorsal surface of tongue; most numerous of papillae.
filiform
mushroom-shaped papillae interspersed among the filiform papillae on the tip of tongue.
fungiform
10-14large round papillae arranged in a āVā between the body of tongue and the base. Taste buds line the walls.
circumvallate
vertical grooves on lateral posterior side of tongue; contain taste buds.
foliate
fibrous connective tissue that surrounds and attaches the roots of teeth to alveolar bone.
periodontal ligament
free gingiva; from cementum in the cervical region to the free gingiva to give support to the gingival.
dentogingival fibers
attached gingiva; fr alveolar crest into the free and attached gingiva tor provide support.
alveologingival fibers
circular; continuous around the neck of the tooth to help maintain the tooth in position.
circumferential fibers
alveolar crest; fr the cervical cementum over the alveolar crest to blend with fibers of the periosteum of bone.
dentoperiosteal fibers
fr the cervical rea of one tooth across to an adjacent tooth to provide resistance to separation of teeth.
transseptal fibers
also called dentoalveolar fiber group.
principal fiber group
fr the root apex to adj. surrounding bone to resist vertical forces.
apical fibers
fr. the root above the apical fibers obliquely toward the occlusal to resist vertical and unexpected strong forces.
oblique fibers
fr. the cementum in the middle of each root to adj. alveolar bone to resis2t tipping of the tooth.
horizontal fibers
fr. alveolar crest to the cementum just below the CEJ to resist intrusive forces.
alveolar crest fibers
fr. cementum between the roots of multirooted teeth to adj. bone to resist vertical and later forces.
interradicular fibers
