Q
What is the hyperosmolar hyperglycemia state?
A
Acute, severe and life threatening condition, like DKA

2
Q
Why is hyperosmolar hyperglycemia state not DKA?
A
Usually a small amount of insulin to inhibit lipolysus, but not enough to prevent hyperglycemia
3
Q
ESVE diagnostic criteria for DKA?
A
- Diagnosis of DM according to ALIVE criteria
- Ketonaemia
- Metabolic acidosis = ph <7.35, decreased bicarb
4
Q
Diagnostic criteria for hyperglycemia hyperosmolar state?
A
- Severe hyperglycemia- >34
- Serum osmolality >325-330mOsm/kg in dogs, >330-350mOsm/kg in cats
- Absence of sig ketoacidosis
- Dehydration
