What is differential diagnosis (DDx)?
determining likelihood of 1 diagnosis vs a different diagnosis
- a stuffy nose could be… cold, flu, allergies, COVID
Comorbid/Comorbidity is?
the presence of 2 or more disorders in the same person
What is chronic?
lasts a long time
What is acute?
lasts a short time
What is a prognosis?
predicted course and outcome
What is etiology?
causes of the condition
What are the 3 D’s?
dysfunction, distress, and death/danger
What are the 3 factors that categorize behavior?
- antecedent behavior
- concurrent validators
- predictive validators
What are antecedent validators?
what was pre-existing before the condition
What are concurrent validators?
what was happening at the time of the condition, what was co-existing
What are predictive validators?
do they respond to the same treatments, how to improve the future
What is the DSM reliant on?
empirical data, research
What are some criticisms of the DSM?
- over pathologize the human experience?
- secrecy
- is it harmful to marginalized people?
- categorization, what is normal?
What is the culture idiom of distress?
knowledgeable and thoughtful of how people talk about their suffering

ways and which distress is manifested in a nonwestern context
