Diagnostics Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are traditional diagnostic methods?
Reviewing the patient history, collection of the appropriate samples such as blood urine, sputum etc. Details of the sample site, correctly collected samples with different tops depending on the sample
What determines the quality of specimen? (8 factors)
When it was taken, how much taken, presence of other microorganisms, aseptic techniques, correct prep of the body site, correct storage container, correct specimen
What different shapes do bacteria come under?
Coccus, bacillus, vibrio (comma shape), spirochete (coiled shape, treponema pallidum)
What is dark ground microscopy?
A type of microscopy that uses indirect lighting to visualise difficult organisms
What is phase contrast microscopy?
A type of microscopy that uses phase-shifted light to visualise unstained living cells useful for urine microscopy
What is electron microscopy?
A type of microscopy that uses electron beam to visualise small particles
What accounts for the smell of E.coli?
It produces acetone, producing its characteristic smell
What are the two types of microscopy?
Colony morphology on a plate and cell morphology under a microscope
What is Baird parker medium?
A type of agar that selects for all different Staph by turning the colony black
What is the best way to identify viruses if an electron microscope is not at hand?
Serology - the scientific study or diagnostic examination of blood serum and other bodily fluids
What is real-time PCR?
Measuring the PCR product using dual labelled fluorescent probes during the replication
