Why do people believe the UK is secular?
Because the proportion of Christians is reducing and atheists are growing.
When does the Church of England date back to?
The 16th century.
Who reformed the church and when?
Henry VIII in the 1530s.

Take part in politics.

Who crowns the monarch?

What are the monarch’s responsibilities?
-Approves senior clerics who consider a list by the church.
-The PM cannot resign without the monarch’s permission.
-Opens new sessions of the Synod.
-Keep her vows made at the coronation.
Is Wales part of the Church of England?
Part of it but in the 20th century it was disestablished due to Henry.
Are Scotland and Northern Ireland part of the Church of England?
No. They have their own church.
When is the national service of remembrance and what is it for?
Early November. For those who fought in the two wars. Includes Christian prayers/hymns.
How many public holidays are there and how many of them are Christian?
8 holidays. 4 of them are Christian.
Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Who founded the first schools?
The church and it was attached to cathedrals/monasteries.
What fraction of schools in the Uk are faith schools?
1/3.
What do some people say about faith schools?
That you should fund it yourself and not expect the state to fund for a higher education.
Why do some faith schools hold prejudice?
Because the pupil is not from the same faith or they are poor and do not represent them.
What does Max Webber describe secularisation as?
He describes it as the disenchantment of the world.
What does the National Secular Society believe?
They believe there should be a clear distinction between state and church. They stand against the promotion of religion within law and institutions. Nobody should be forced to follow a religion.
-Believe in Freedom of belief/expression.
How much has the church declined in followers?
In 1983 40% followed the church and in 2014 only 17% did..
How much has the Muslim population increased?
In 1983 it was 0.5% and in 2014 it was 5%.
How much has atheism grown? (percent wise.)
Form 31% in 1983 to 49% in 2014.
Where is Christianity still strong?
Rome, Latin America and the USA.
What does euthanasia mean?
The right to die.
What are active and passive euthanasia?
Active is ending s life with deliberate action eg injections. Passive is withholding/withdrawal of medical treatment, turning off a life support machine, etc.
Passive is legal in the Uk.
