Q

What is the pharmacological effect of prokinetoc laxatives?

A

Its activation produces the release of acetylcholine which is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the GI tract and further contraction of the muscle layer of the colon and relaxation of the circular muscle layer leading to the propulsion of luminal content

Q

What is the mechanism of action of lubiprostone?

A

Activates the CIC-2 chloride channels that causes and efflux of chloride ions into the lumen which in turn leads to an efflux of sodium ions through a paracellular pathway to maintain isoelectric neutrality. As a result, water follows sodium into the lumen in order to maintain isotonic equilibrium , thereby increasing intestinal fluid secretion
