It proposes that individuals learn the values, attitudes and techniques of behaviour through associations and interaction with different people
What groups does differential association argue we learn most from
Family and peer groups
What are the 4 factors involved with differential association
Imitation-criminal skills observed through those around us
Learned attitude-socialisation writhing groups expose individual to different attitudes
Pro-criminal attitudes-a person is exposed to pro crime or anti crime values
Learning criminal acts-a person may learn particular techniques for committing crime,ie.how to break into a house
Frequency of the crime
How often is the individual exposed to deviant or criminal behaviour
Duration
The length of time and individual spends in an environment where deviant behaviour is prevalent. The longer the exposure the stronger the behaviour will be
Intensity
The important the significance of the people involved with the association are.
Priority
Levels of importance in association
What percentage of offenders re offend according to sutherlands study
63% reoffend as they learn more skills, prison acts as a university of crime
In his study if white collar crime what did Sutherland find
He found that attitudes in the workplace are often normalised criminal behaviour( claiming that everyone is doing it )
This makes it easier for individuals to justify their own behaviour
