diffusion, osmosis and active transport Flashcards
(12 cards)
what is diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration and is passive
what is osmosis
The movement of particles from a high water concentration to a low water concentration through a partially permeable membrane and is passive
what is a partially permeable membrane
a membrane with very small holes in it
how does temperature affect diffusion rate
particles have more kinetic energy so are moving more
how does surface area affect diffusion rate
faster because more space for the particles to move
how does distance affect diffusion rate
shorter distance faster diffusion as less space to travel in a shorter amount of time
how does concentration affect diffusion rate
the more concentration the more particles there are to move to faster diffusion rate
why can we describe diffusion as passive
no energy from respiration is required
what is active transport
substances moving from a low to high concentration and requires energy from respiration
what are the variables in potato required practical
independent- concentration of solution
dependent- change in mass of potato
control- type of potato, volume of solution in tube, time
potato required practical
1-take your potato and use the cork borer to get 4 equal pieces
2- weigh mass of potato and record in the table
3- get for test tubes and label them with the concentration
4- place each potato in a test tube
5-leave in solution for at least 12 hours
6- carefully tip solution down sink and roll potatoes in paper towels
7- measure the mass and record in the table
8- calculate the change in mass
how to calculate change in mass
change in mass/starting mass X 100
