What is the role of the mouth?
To help you chew and the salivary glands help to moisten the food so that it can move more easily through the esophagus into the stomach.
What is the role of esophagus?
Transports food entering the mouth through the throat into the stomach.
What is the role of the stomach?
Holds the food and mixes it with acid and enzymes that continue to break down the food into a paste or liquid.
What is the role of pancreas?
It makes pancreatic juices called enzymes which break down sugars, fats and starches.
What is the role of the liver?
- Makes and secretes bile.
- To process and purify the blood containing newly absorbed nutrients that come from the small intestines.
What is the role of the gallbladder?
Stores bile that’s produced by our liver to help us digest fats, so when we eat, the gallbladders thin muscular lining squeezes the bile into the small intestine through the main bile duct.
What is the role of the small intestine?
Helps to break down food, absorb nutrients that our body needs and to get rid of unnecessary things.
it also makes sure that no harmful bacterias enter the body
What is the role of the large intestine?
Absorbs water and salt from the material that has not been digested as food and gets rid of any leftover waste products.
What is the role of the rectum?
Receives stool from the colon and signals the brain weather or not that waste should leave the body yet.
What is the role of the anus?
When the waste from your body is leaving either as liquid waste or solid waste.

What is bile and where is it stored/produced?
A fluid made and released by the liver and it’s stored in the gallbladder. It helps in digestion and breaks down fats.
What is an accessory organ in digestion?
Liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Food doesn’t pass through these 3 organs as they contain bile duct.
Where does absorption of the most nutrients occur?
Small intestine, little villi suck in the nutrients where our body needs it.
How long does it take in general to digest carbohydrates, proteins and fats?
C- 1-2 hours
P- 3-5 hours
F- 7-9 hours

What is peristalsis?
Muscles that contract to push food to the stomach gently but slowly.
What is the role of saliva in digestion? Why is it important?
It moistens the food so that it’s easier to go down and starts to break down carbohydrates. It’s important because it helps the food we eat digest.
What is chyme?
Located in the STOMACH.
The food that you eat get mixed around in the stomach by their walls
What are villi?
Located in the SMALL INTESTINE.
Absorbs nutrients, vitamins and minerals that we need.
What is the importance of fibre in a healthy digestive tract?
Helps to push food through the digestive tract and helps us to use bathroom properly/regularly and help to bulk up foods.
What does normal faces look like?
Medium brown.
How can you tell if your digestive tract isn’t functioning properly?
If you use the bathroom right after eating, not regularly or constipated.
What is poop made of?
3/4 Water
1/4 dead bacteria
Fiber, fats, inorganic material, dead cell, live bacteria, mucus and protein.
