Digestive System Flashcards
(13 cards)
Amylase
Enzyme that breaks down starches into simple carbohydrates.
Amylase is found in saliva (produced by salivary glands) and in pancreatic juice (produced by the pancreas) released into the small intestine.
Lymphatic vessel
Transports absorbed fatty acids to the bloodstream
Pepsin
Enzyme that starts to digest proteins in the stomach
Pancreas
Organ that produces pancreatic juices that have important digestive enzymes & will neutralize acid chyme.
- Sends what it produces to the small intestine (duodenum)
Parietal cells
Produces hydrochloric acid in the stomach
Peristalsis
Muscular contractions that push food through the digestive system
Bile
- Chemical that breaks up large fatty droplets
- Helps neutralize acid chyme
Duodenum
Upper section of the small intestine
Gallbladder
Small organ that stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver until it’s needed for digestion.
Chyme
Substance that is produced after mechanical and chemical digestion in the stomach that will then enter the small intestine
Esophagus
Muscular tube connecting the throat and the stomach
Large intestine (colon)
- Has harmless and beneficial bacteria (some of which produce vitamins like vitamin K which the large intestine (colon) then absorbs into the bloodstream).
- Reabsorbs the water in chyme to form solid feces.
Villi
- Villi are small, finger-like projections in the small intestine that increase surface area for nutrient absorption.
- Covered in microvilli, which also increases the surface area
- Very vascular (have capillaries running through them) so the nutrients can be taken by capillaries and transported
