Dimensional Analysis Flashcards
(23 cards)
Measurement
Quantitative descriptions of something.
Atoms
Buliding blocks of matter; The basic unit of a chemical element.
Elements
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes.
Compound
Made of 2 or more different kinds of elements
Frame
A basic structure that underlies or supports a system, concept, or text. In discussion, the framework consists of a combination of shared context and rules.
Theory
A well substantiated, comprehensive, testable explanation (model) of a particular aspect of nature. Makes accurate predictions about a variety of different experiments. Not yet falsified/proved wrong. Can be refined.
Direct Observation
Looking at the event or occurrence as it happens.
Indirect Observation
Looking for evidence of the occurrence.
Brownian Motion
Small objects moving around in water or perpetual random motion of objects due to impacts of atoms and molecules in the surrounding medium.
Absolute zero
The temperature at which molecular motion ceases; the lower possible temperature.
Temperature
A measure of the thermal energy in a system; how much atoms and molecules are moving.
Subatomic particles
Particles that make up atoms including protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Nucleus
The dense, positively charged (and very small) center of the atom; neutral subatomic particle found in the nucleus of most atoms.
Electron
The negatively charged pieces of the atom that can be found somewhere outside of the nucleus in the atom.
Orbital
The spatial distribution of the electron.
Atomic Theory
The current scientific model for how atoms work, which includes the quantum mechanics of subatomic particles.
Atomic number
Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. Shown on the periodic table and used in ordering it.
Atomic symbol
The average mass of the atoms of an element. Shown on the periodic table.
Isotope
Atoms of the same element containing different numbers of neutrons and therefore having different masses.
Periods
Horizontal row of elements on the periodic table.
Groups
Vertical column of elements on the periodic table.
Molecular formula
A chemical formula that indicates numbers of atoms of each element in one molecule of a substance
Subscript
Tells you how many of the preceding atom are present in the moleculesqq
