Dimesions of Inequality: Gender Flashcards
(2 cards)
What do Mitsos and Browne (1998) on education?
Coursework favours girls doe several reasons, for example, girls are more organised than boys and tend to develop better speaking and listening skills. This means that they may therefore perform better than boys which creates inequality. A reason for this may be gender socialisation as girls are socialised to be more academic and focused which therefore benefits them when it comes to schoolwork. Therefore, the gender gap is a product of the changed system of assessment, before coursework and GCSEs girls tended to do worse in education as education was tailored towards boys academic needs.
What did Epstein (1998) find on working class boys in education?
Working class boys are more likely to be labelled ‘sissies’ or ‘swots’ if they are seen doing their work. Working class boys may therefore feel peer pressured to not do well in school from fear of being picked on or harassed. Epstein noted that masculinity is viewed negatively within education which means that boys could reject the pro school culture and values of the education system, leading them to fail. Boys may therefore feel unmotivated in class and exams and may choose to act out instead which further causes them to underachieve.
