Diodes Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is it called when the voltage across a diode is negative?
No current can flow, this is reverse bias
What is forward voltage drop
The voltage that’s dropped from traversing through a component
What are the three regions of functionality in a diode?
Forward - forward bias (a certain amount of positive voltage is required - The forward voltage is the amount of voltage needed to get current to flow across the diode)
Reverse - reverse bias
Breakdown - Lot’s voltage and amps gets through
What diode would you use for low wattage or current?
It should also be good for high frequency applications
Small Signal Diode
What are the two main types of diodes
germanium and silicone
silicone is more popular
What diode would you use fo large currents at higher voltages?
This will not be good for high frequency
power diodes
Not good for past 1 MHz
What diode has that it has a low forward voltage drop than a regular diode, can take high frequency and high current?
Good for their low power and fast switching speeds (lower voltage to start moving current around 0.4 volts opposed to 0.6)
Schottky diode
->Z-
What diode has avalanche current?
Zener Diode
Avalanche current becomes stable once a certain amount of reverse voltage is supplied
->z-
What does forward voltage drop mean with a diode?
This is the minimum amount of voltage that needs to pass through it to make it light up or pass current
The more voltage dropped, the higher the current that leavers the diode
