Discovering Outdoor Environments Flashcards
(24 cards)
Ecosystem
A biological community of interacting organisms and their environment
Renewable energy
Energy from a source that is not deplete when used, such as wind or solar power
Migration
Seasonal movement of animals from one region to another
Fossil fuels
A natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms
Biotic factors
Include the living parts of an ecosystem such as plants and animals
Abiotic factors
Are environmental components that are not living
Organism
An individual animal, plant or single celled life form
Species
Organisms capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding
Population
All the inhabitants of a particular place
Community
A group of organisms living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common
Atmosphere
The envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet
Fire stick farming
When indigenous Australians use fire to burn vegetation change the composition of plant and animal species in an area
Food web
Consists of many food chains, showing how plants and animals are interconnected by different paths
Food chain
Follows a single path as animals eat each other
Producers
manufacture complex inorganic substances
Consumers
Organisms, that obtain nutrients from other organisms
Decomposers
Breakdown organic to supply themselves with energy
Primary succession
The change that occurs in a area where no soil existed
E.g. Ice melting to expose bare rock
Secondary succession
Occurs when a developed ecosystem gets disturbed by natural disasters
E.g. fires burning down trees
John glover
Was one of the precursors of an Australian style of painting. He arrived in Tasmania from England, his depiction of the Tasmanian light was bright and clear, was a departure from his European paintings and gave his paintings a true Australian quality. This can change our view on outdoor environments due to depicting a incorrect view of a environment
Artistic understanding
Refers to how outdoor environments were depicted by artists overtime
Indigenous relationships with outdoor environments
- Spiritual connection with the land
- Land as mother
- They are related to and are apart of the land
Consequence of removing a component from the ecosystem
If one species in the ecosystem ceases to exist, on or more members in the rest of the chain could cease to exist too due to one or more organism not having a food source.
Drought
Short term effects:
-plants starting to die due to lack of water
-Decline in volume of water streams and rivers
-Crop growth is decreased sue to lack of irrigation
Long term effects:
-Can cause sudden sinking of the earths surface
-Seawater intrusion
