What are pathogenic organisms?

A

Organisms, including bacteria, viruses, proto-zoa, or internal parasites, capable of causing disease ( such as giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, typhoid fever, cholera, or infectious hepatitis) in a host (such as a person). No pathogenic organisms do not cause disease.

What is disinfection?

A

The process designed to kill or inactivate most microorganisms in the water or wastewater, including essentially all pathogenic (disease causing) bacteria. There are several ways to disinfect, with chlorination being the most frequently used in water and wastewater treatment plants. Compare with sterilization.

A

What are bacteria?

A

Bacteria are living organisms, microscopic in size, that usually consist of a single cell. Most bacteria use organic matter for their food and produce waste products as a result of their life processes.
