Displacement Reactions Flashcards
(5 cards)
Reactivity serie
Most reactive to least reactive
Na Ca Mg Al Zn Fe Pb (H) Cu Ag Au
What is a displacement reaction?
Reactions that involve the displacement of metal ions in solution by different metals
How do you know if a reaction will take place?
If the metal is more reactive then the solution
Or to the right of the metal
Hints of a displacement reaction in a formula
If the metal has swapped
Example of a displacement reaction
[reaction] this is a displacement reaction
[observation] when the (colour) (metal) solid is placed into the (colour) (solution) solution, a (colour) solid is form after a few minutes, the (colour) (metal) started to disappear and the (colour) solution faded to (colour)
[word and balanced formula]
[chemistry and link] (metal) is more reactive than (metal) so (metal) will displace (ion) from solution. The (more reactive metal) atoms lose electrons to form (metal ions) (equations) therefore the (colour metal) metal gets smaller as the (colour) (metal ion) ions go into solution. The (ion) gains electrons to form (metal) atoms (equation) therefor the (colour) solid (metal) is formed. The (colour) colour of the solution fades to (colour) as the (ions) ions are removed from solution.
