dispositional explanations Flashcards
define authoritarian personality
Adorno proposed that people who are highly obedient usually possess an authoritarian personality. this involves having a high level of respect to leaders and are especially drawn to those who emphasise the value of the family unit and love of their country
how do people develop an authoritarian personality
it is a psychodynamic explanation- Adorno proposed that people who have experienced highly critical, high expecting and severe punishing parenting styles in childhood will feel a sense of resentment. this resentment cannot be inflicted onto their parents due to fear of punishment so is inflicted on people they see as lower socially than themselves.
procedure adorno
2000 white middle class males completed the F scale and other tests
this includes statements like ‘childrens most important value should be obedience and respect to authority’
milgram use of RWA (right wing authoritarianism scale)
found correlation between high score and high frequency of shocks
used original pps from his study 20 with high shock frequency and 20 with low shock frequency and gave the F scale.
locus of control
high internal locus of control= taking personal responsibility for actions regardless of situational variables.
high external locus of control- placing responsibility on external factors regardless of dispositional factors.
