Perspective of pluralism
- Strives to take this perspective
- No culture represents a norm or superior position
Culture
- Dynamic concept of shared meanings and experiences passed down over time
- Shared beliefs, values, practices, etc.
- Can also refer to sexual and gender minorities, socioeconomic groups, religious groups, cooperations, etc.
Multiculturalism
- Policy of integration in which a less dominant culture is nurtured within a broader dominant culture
- Acknowledges and values diversity in tangible (economic) and intangible (social) ways
Multiculturalism from above
- State sponsored structures and policies promote diversity and inclusion
Multiculturalism from below
- Activities designed to support intercultural relations are initiated by individuals, groups, and communities in the absence of system-level support
Cultural competence
- Generally defined as possessing the skills and knowledge of a culture in order to effectively work with individual of the culture
- This definition includes an appreciation of cultural differences and the ability to effectively work with individuals
Cultural humility
- The ability to remain open to learning about other cultures while acknowledging one’s own lack of competence and recognizing power dynamics that impact the relationship
- Engage in continuous self reflection

Intersectionality
- The combination of different power structures to create specific forms of oppression
Maginalization
- Being involuntarily disconnected from the economic and social mainstream of the society in which one lives
Generally involves
- Being discriminated against,
- being poor,
- having limited personal and collective power, and
- being excluded from social opportunities
Oppresion
- Unjust exercise of power or authority especially by the imposition of burdens
- Feeling and condition of being “pressed down” through social acts of restriction
- Social act of placing severe restrictions on a person, group, or institutions
- Oppression advances power, maintains systems of power in the hands of the powerful
Conscientization
- Process by which people become aware of the sociopolitical and psychological conditions that oppress them
Reframing
- Shift analysis of problems from individual, victim blaming, to alternative sociopolitical and power inequalities
Community science
- Community psychology approach that links understanding and action and strives to create participatory and collaborative relationships with community members
Working toward equity
- From treating everyone as equal, toward identifying and addressing inequity
Diversity in research
Important things to consider
- Which topics of research are chosen
- How questions are asked
- Which samples are included in a study
- The power dynamics between the researcher and the community as well as the dynamics with the community
