DM Flashcards
(23 cards)
what type of DM do dogs get
absolute insulin deficiency
dog signalment for DM
female, middle aged, smaller
clinical signs of DM
PU/PD
weight loss
good appetite
muscle atrophy
bilateral cataracts
hepatomegaly
how to diagnose DM in a dog
hyperglycemia, glucosuria, Consistent CS
what % of dogs will have bilateral cataracts by 6 mo
50%
chem parameters that support DM in a dog
hyperglycemia
hypercholesterolemia
hypertriglyceridemia
what type of insulin do we use with dogs
intermediate insulin
general starting dose for dog insulin
0.25-0.5 mg/kg q12h
when do we run a BG curve after starting insulin
7-14 days later. change dose by 25% if needed
what dose is considered insulin resistant
> 1.5 U/kg per injection
what is the ideal BG range for dogs
80-200
what is the ideal nadir for dogs and when
80-150 @6hr
what can cause insulin resistance
cushings, UTI, pancreatitis, intact female
PU/PD, normal BG and glucosuria?
primary kidney
PU/PD, high BG and no glucosuria?
look for other causes of PU not DM
what type of insulin do we use in cats
long acting
what do we need to monitor cats for on SGLT2i drugs
eugly DKA and diarrhea
ideal BG range for cats
80-300
how to monitor sglt drugs
recheck in 3 days BG, ketones, and diarrhea
then follow every other week for a month
spot BG at home are sufficient for this drug
how to monitor insulin usage
BG curves at 7-14d PE and weight, can repeat curves at home
if cat BG is <80 what do we do with the dose
drop dose by 25-50%
if the BG is high what do we do to insulin
increase dose by 0.5-1 U/cat
what can falsely decrease fructosamine
hyperthyroid and hypoalbuminemia
