dm test review Flashcards
(19 cards)
red tops
no additives, no separator and is used for chem, serology, and blood
red and black top (tiger top)
silicone gel is there to separate particles, it’s used for chem and serology
green top
has heparin shaken w the sample to test ammonia levels and blood gases, and ABG-arterial blood gases (shows respiratory status)
lavender top
EDTA shaken w the sample for hematology, some blood banking, and chem
gray top
has a glycol inhibitor that tests glucose levels
collection order of tubes
yellow [blood cultures], red [non additive tubes], light blue [coagulation tubes], tiger top [serum separators], green [heparin tube], and lavender [EDTA]
complete blood count
used to evaluate overall health and shows the number of WBC, RBC, platelet, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels in blood
WBC counts
leukopenia- too few
leukocytosis- too many
RBC counts
men have 4.7-6.1 million mcL
females have 4.2-5.4 million mcL
hemoglobin
Can see how efficient carrying O2 and taking away CO2
also tells if there is any abnormality in the hemoglobin breakdoqn
hematocrit
volume of RBCs and shows the viscosity of blood [v good for identifying sickle cell anemia
platelets
main components when dealing w blood clots
complete metabolic panel
another test that shows the efficiency of the function of one’s organs
Rh factor
if one has it, it makes their blood type positive, otherwise it is negative
blood characteristics
pH: alkaline 7.35-7.45
5x more viscous than H2O
The temp is 1 C higher than oral or rectal body temp 38 C
Salt concentration due to the nutrients transported by the blood
venipuncture sample procedure
When obtaining a sample there must be an anticoagulant present to prevent blood clotting
collection tube
where the blood goes during venipuncture and it has vacuum like properties
needles
range from 14-26 gage (the higher the number, the smaller the needle)
blood typing
8 types A+- a antigen and rh factor A- -a antigen and no rh factor B+ -b antigen and rh factor B- -b antigen and no rh factor AB+ -a and b antigen and rh factor AB- -a and b antigen and no rh factor O+ - no antigens and rh antigen O- -no antigen and no rh antigen
