0

What do proteins do

Form the structure of living organisms and are vital in the functioning of their cells

1

What are proteins made of?

Chains of units called amino acids

2

How are the amino acids linked?

Peptide bonds

3

What are fibrous proteins

The chains are folded into parallel strands and cross-linked for strength.

4

What are fibrous proteins used for

To make structural materials, such as collagen, important in skin and bone

5

What are globular proteins

The chains are folded into ball shapes that are held together with weak bonds giving a delicate structure

6

What are globular proteins for?

Form enzymes, membrane proteins, some hormones and antibodies

7

What is the DNA structure made of?

Two strands of nucleotides twisted into a spiral called a double helix

8

What is each nucleotide made of?

A phosphate, a deoxyribose sugar and a base

9

What are the four DNA bases?

Adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), guanine (G)

10

What does Adenine pair with?

Thymine

11

What does cytosine pair with?

Guanine

12

What is each group of 3 bases on DNA called?

Triplet

13

What does each triplet code for

A specific amino acid

14

When does DNA replicate

Before a cell divides my meiosis or mitosis

15

How many strands does RNA have?

One

16

What sugar does RNA have

Ribose

17

What bases does RNA have?

Adenine, uracil, cytosine, guanine

18

What are the two forms of RNA

Messenger and transfer

19

Where is mRNA formed?

In the nucleus

20

What is each group of 3 bases on mRNA called?

Codon

21

What does each codon code for?

And amino acid

22

Where is tRNA found

The cytoplasm

23

What is each group of 3 bases on tRNA called?

Anticodon

24

What does tRNA do?

Picks up and carries a specific amino acid to the ribosome to be joined into a forming protein.

25

What kind of bond forms between adjacent amino acids

Peptide bonds

26

The stages of transporting protein for secretion

Rough ER - Golgi Apparatus
