DNA and RNA Flashcards
(13 cards)
Nucleotide structure of DNA
phosphate, pentose, nitrogen base
What is the name of the bonding between nucleotides, and how is it formed?
Strong phosphodiester bond, from condensation reaction
What is the type of bonding between base pairs?
Weak hydrogen bonds
What are purines? Which base pairs are these?
Purines have 2 rings of carbon, A G
What are pyrimidines? Which base pairs are these?
Pyrimidines have one ring of carbons, C T
Why do we group the base pairs in a certain order?
They have different numbers of nitrogen, so grouping them balances out the ratio
2 features of having hydrogen bonds
- Easily broken allows for easy replication
- Many hydrogen bonds give the molecule stability
Why does DNA coil?
To keep it compact
What is the role of the sequence of bases?
It allows information to be stored
2 features associated with a double helix
- Prevents the code from being disrupted
- Gives the molecule stability
What does the sugar- phosphate backbone do?
Gives the DNA strength
3 differences between DNA and RNA
- Single polynucleotide chain
- Ribose NOT deoxyribose
- URACIL instead of thymine
3 advantages of genetic code
Degenerate, universal, non-overlapping
