2
Q

what is the function of the nucleolus?

A

make the small parts or subunits, which make up the ribosomes. The nucleolus makes the subunits from ribosomal RNA and proteins

3
Q

what is the function of the nuclear pores?

A

they regulate the movement of molecules from the nucleus into the cytoplasm and allows Rna to leave the nucleus.

13
Q

how are complimentary coded strands created?

A

the nitrogenous bases pair up to form the rungs (twisted ladder). The 4 bases all have different chemical structures which means that they can only pair up one way, known as complimentary base pairing

16
Q

what is the relationship between DNA, genes & chromosomes?

A

DNA is stored in the nucleus as chromosomes. A chromosome consists of segments of DNA known as genes

17
Q

what are the functions of DNA?

A
  • Carry genetic information for inheritance, requiring DNA replication
  • Contains the instructions for ribosomes to produce proteins in protein synthesis
18
Q

what does DNA in chromosomes do?

A

code for particular inherited characteristics

19
Q

what is evolution?

A

The gradual change in the characteristics of a species over a period of time

20
Q

what is natural selection?

A

The process by which a species becomes better adapted to its environment

21
Q

what is the theory of evolution by natural selection?

A
  • mutations in the DNA code can lead to variations in populations
  • more offspring are produced than can survive due to selection pressures
  • some traits/variations are more favourable in the environment (survival of the fittest)
  • favourable traits are passed onto the next generation
22
Q

what is survival of the fittest?

A

individuals with the most favourable traits in a particular environment will have a survival advantage

23
Q

what is an allele?

A

an alternative version of a specific gene

24
Q

what does dominant mean?

A

where one allele masks the effect of the alternative allele

25
what does recessive mean?
the allele which is only shown if it is not masked by the effects of a dominant allele
26
what is a genotype?
the genes present in an individual , usually represented by letters RR, Rr, rr
27
what is a phenotype?
the physical appearance of an individual as determined by its genotype
28
what is homozygous?
where an individual's two identical alleles for a given gene
29
what is heterozygous?
where an individual has two different alleles for a given gene
30
Describe how pairs of alleles produce a person’s individual genetic make-up
two alleles are forms of a gene & a gene makes up the characteristics of an individual as determined by its genotype and phenotype
