How subjective and Kapadia and Broomfield?
Broomfield - completely subjective, forms his opinion based on his interviews and consistently narrates his opinion to the audience
Kapadia - somewhat subjective, he uses archived footage, and bases the narrative of Amy’s friends and family’s thoughts, does not give his personal view but Mitch and Blake are presented as antagonists and Amy a victim
Presence
Broomfield
Extremely present through the doc, he is central, shows the whole filmmaking process including unsuccessful. Carries mic and headset to keep involved, shows interviews and voices opinions consistently
(as seen in Biggie and Tupac when he tries to get an interview from Suge-Knight)
Kapadia
Unpresent, never gives an interview, he lets Amy’s family and friends talk in order to build a big picture. The doc does not go into detail over how he acheived interviews, only uses recorded phone calls and interviews. Kapadia is unoresent as he wanted it to be like therapy
Interviews
Broomfield -
present, conducts them, demanding and invasive, has no boundaries (aileen). He lies to get an honest response
Kapadia
His voice is not heard, interviews from archived footage or Amy’s friends and family
Narration
B
Voice of God narration - he narrates his thoughts and feelings, objective truth, he creates it based on his opinion
K
Uses multiple voice narration from different people in Amy’s life to allow the audience to draw their own conclusions
Editing and Sound
B
Very little editing, hand held camera often, sound is genuine and recorded there and then - very little post editing
K
Archived footage is edited together to build his version of the narrative
Use of voice overs of interviews to give a deeper emotional effect
(ringing of telephone to emerrse spectator in phone calls)
Digital tech paragraphs
Camera, editing, sound
Camera work
Digital Cameras to record the Archive footage - access to a wider range of footage to shape the story (material from Nick Shymansky, Juliette and Lauren key)
(home videos - Amy and Blake, we see Blake controlling Amy)
Included family and childhood photos of Amy, There was a lack of behind the scenes footage - limiting the ability to make a film. There was no clear narrative.
Editing
Digital Sound to record the hours of sound - a greater sense of truthfulness as subject could talk freely for hours without interruption
We only ever here interviews and never kapadia, voice over of people who personally knew amy, the dialogue comes from found footage and interviews for the documentar
Shaping the narrative - Mitch’s show, Saint Lucia sequence, Amy was unhappy but still idolised her father
Long uncomfortable shots of Amy in active addiction after the media’s bullying
Sound
Digital Editing allowed hours of footage to be processed, montage to be constructed and captions added.
Amy is clearly the work of a number of film-makers and Kapadia’s skill as a filmmaker is really seen in the editing room. He has amassed a great deal of archive footage from media sources and placed these alongside more personal filmic insights into Winehouse’s life.
