Domains Flashcards
What do all cells have in common?
Plasma cell membrane, cytoplasm membrane, double stranded DNA genome and ribosomes
What are prokaryotic cells?
They are unicellular cells with no membrane bound structures
Where is the chromosome of prokaryotes located
it is a piece of double stranded DNA located in the nucleoid
Prokaryotes are divided into two domains. Which ones?
Bacteria and archea
What is the cell membrane of prokaryotes composed of?
It is a thin lipid bilayer that completely surrounds the cell
Where is the cell wall located in prokaryotes
located outside the cell membrane, surrounds the cell and thus protects it
What is a difference between the cell wall of bacteria and archea?
bacteria cell walls contain peptidoglycan while that of archea doesn’t
How do prokaryotes reproduce?
binary fission
Can procaryotes live anywhere?
Almost because they have diverse metabolic processes therefore they can get their energy sources from a variety of different sources.
How can you distinguish a eukaryote from a prokaryote?
Eukaryotes have cells with a nucleus while prokaryotes do not
Eukaryotes also have thousands of mitochondria
How did eukaryotes come to be?
Theory of endosymbiosis (a prokaryotic cell engulfed another and didn’t digest it therefore one cell lived inside another )
What are photosynthetic eukaryotes?
They are cells that have an extra organelle called the plastid which is said to have also been created through endosymbiosis
Which cells are bigger?
Eukaryotic
Do all cells have organelles
yes
Where is DNA found in eukaryotes
nucleus
