domains, kingdoms Flashcards
(10 cards)
List domains
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
List Kingdom
Fungi, plantae, animalia
Describe fungi
-The yeast are unicellular the rest are multi cellular
-They’re heterotrophic: like animalia.
-Cells surrounded by a wall of chiton, a modified cellulose.
plantae
-autotrophic.
-cell walls
-can be vascular which has phloem vessels
- or non vascular, which doesn’t have real roots, stems and veins in leaves. -they Photosynthesise
-they pollinate
animalia
No cell walls, heterotrophic. Cellular respiration
Why is monera outdated?
Because bacteria can be parasites, and pathogens, which means they photosynthesise and pass on diseases.
However, archaea are symbiotic or nitrogen-fixed organisms. they don’t photosynthesise and pass on diseases.
Bacteria
- No nucleus and no
membrane-bound organelles - Includes: Pathogens and good
bacteria, photosynthetic
bacteria containing green and
blue pigment (chlorophyll and
phycocyanin) - Cell wall composition =
peptidoglycan
Archaea
-No nucleus and no
membrane-bound organelles
- They can withstand extreme
temperatures and pressures or
metabolise chemicals such as
sulphur, methane , chlorine or
flourine.
- Cell wall composition = mostly
polysaccharides e.g.
pseudomurein
Eukarya
- presence of a distinct
nucleus - Complex cell structure with
membrane-bound organelles
and a nucleus
Protists
Everything that’s not a
plant, fungus, or animal
* Not a true group, just a
wastebin taxon. ‘the
leftovers’
* Algae, amoebae, slime
moulds, parasites, etc
