1
Q
What is Deformation?
A
- Deformation is when forces change either the size or shape of a body
- It can also result in a change in the body’s motion
2
Q
What can happen if forces act in opposite directions?
A
- If they stretch a body (outwards), the forces are described as tensile
- If they compress a body (inwards), the forces are described as compressive
Tensile forces act to increase the length of an object.
Compressive forces act to reduce the length of an object in a given dimension.
3
Q
What can happen if a load is attatched to the end of a spring?
A
- A force is applied to the string
- Causes the string to extend or compress
4
Q
What is the natural length of the spring?
A
- The length of the spring without any force being applied (i.e. no compression or extension)
5
Q
Describe extension and compression.
A
- Extension is when a spring increases in length. The amount of extension can be calculated by subtracting the natural length from the extended length of the spring
- Compression is when a spring decreases in length. The amount of compression can be calculated by subracting the compressed length from the natural length
6
Q
What is the limit of proportionality?
A
- It is when the extension of the spring no longer has a proportional relationship to the force applied.
