DOT POINT 1 Flashcards
(19 cards)
main functions of the Human Nervous System
- receives information
- processes information
- coordinates a response to that information
What does the Central Nervous system include?
Brain and Spinal Cord
Role of the CNS
receive and transmits neural messages to and from the PNS, process it and to activate appropriate responses.
Role of the Brain
- ‘Control centre’ for the body
- Organ that coordinates mental processes and behaviour and regulates bodily activity
- Processes sensory information
- Coordinates a response to that information
Describe the Spinal Cord
Long, thin bundle of nerves that extends from the base of the brain to the lower back.
Function of the Spinal Cord
enable neural communication between the brain and the rest of the body
how does the spinal cord process sensory and motor information?
- Receives sensory information from PNS and sends up to the brain through afferent tracts, which transmits sensory (afferent) messages. (up the spinal cord)
- Receives motor information from the brain and sends it down to various parts of the body using the PNS through efferent tracts, which transmits motor (efferent) messages. (down the spinal cord)
Afferent Tracts
which transmit sensory (afferent) messages from the PNS to the brain
Efferent Tracts
which transmit motor (efferent) messages from the brain to the PNS
SAME
Sensory Afferent and Motor Efferent
What is the Peripheral Nervous System comprised of?
All network of neurons within the body, outside of the brain and spinal cord (CNS).
Comprised of muscles, organs and glands (MOG)
The two sub-divisions of the PNS
Autonomic nervous system
Somatic nervous system
purpose of autonomic nervous system
Controls involuntary movement and functioning
what is the autonomic nervous system comrpised of
Network of neurons that carry neural messages between the CNS, visceral muscles, internal organs and glands.
2 further divisons: sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
visceral muscles
(smooth, non- skeletal, e.g diaphragm)
internal organs
(e.g. heart, stomach, liver)
glands
(e.g. sweat, salivary and adrenal).
what is the Somatic Nervous System comprised of
network of nerves within the body, connected to our sensory receptors and skeletal muscles. (SSS)
voluntary movements
Contains sensory neurons and motor neurons
