polysyndeton
when a sentence contains multiple coordinating conjunctions, typically ‘and’, in close succession resulting in emphasis
consonant sounds
sounds made by partially or completely closing the vocal tract
consonance
a repetition of consonant sounds, typically within or at the end of words.
e.g. the fair breeze blew, the white foam flew
enjambment
a poetic device where a sentence or phrase continues beyond the end of a line or stanza without a pause, enhancing the flow and creating a sense of movement
caesura
a break or pause (usually for sense) in the middle of a verse line
e.g. “to be or not to be- that is the question”
parallelism
refers to sentences or paragraphs with consistent grammatical elements
anthropomorphism
it is the attribution of human traits, feelings, and behaviours to inanimate objects, non human animals or nature
catharsis
the process of releasing and thereby providing relief from strong or repressed emotions.
e.g. “music is a means of catharsis for them”
situational irony
a type of irony where the opposite of what is expected happens, resulting in humorous or tragic consequences.
e.g. the local fire house has burnt to the ground, this is situational irony since this is the place which should be most safe from fire
sibilance
a literary divice is which a hissing sound is made through the repetition of the consonant sounds like ‘s’,’sh’,’th’, ‘f’ etc. they wont create sibilance if they don’t create the ‘s’ sound.
