Q

Describe the case study in a nut shell

A

Previous Belgian colony struggling with life after independence.

Blessed with physical resources but currently seems unable to convert this in to economic progress.

A bright future awaits for a booming population when/if current issues can be resolved and DRC has the capacity to be a real continental powerhouse.

Q

What is DRC’s coastline access?

A

DRC is not landlocked.

DRC has a small coastline with few ports.

It’s chief port of Matadi allows access to global sea lanes and global trade, stimulating development

Shape of DRC means it is still expensive and time consuming to get goods in/out of country

Q

What are the impacts of high rainfall

A

High rainfall can be a cause of intense flooding. This can lower/damage crop yields, erode fertile soils and increase food insecurity, which would hinder development.

For example, heavy rains in January 2018 caused severe flooding, landslides and silting in nine communes of Kinshasa, affecting more than 15,700 people and claiming 51 lives.

A

Tropical rainforests

- But might they also be a resource curse (e.g. Blood diamonds)
19

35
How does MSF hinder development?
aid can increase dependency
