Driving Flashcards
(41 cards)
If someone is younger than 18, what are new driver requirements?
- present a valid permit from 32 hours of class
- pass DPS written test
- minimum of 44 hours of training
- at least 10 hours night driving
New driver requirements for 18+ year old
- 6 hour adult class to obtain a permit
need a copy of DL or Learner’s permit
Requirements for entering neuro driving rehab program
- MD referral
- valid Driver’s license, learner’s permit
- DL-63 form
- seizure free for 3 months
- pre-appt questionaire
What does driving rehab program consist of?
- driver evaluation (clinical eval)
- behind the wheel eval
- behind the wheel training –> prep for DPS exam
- equipment prescription
what is the DL-63 form?
low vision form from physician/optometrist
*cleared to drive with special glasses
(needs to be within past 3 months)
What does the clinical evaluation consist of? (direct from the slides)
- medical/driving history (anxiety measurement GAD-7)
- optec eye exam
- cognitive and perceptual assessment
- physical assessment
- behind the wheel eval
T or F: everyone from neuro driving rehab has to pass the DPS test and not allowed to take 3rd party testing
True
What do you check for in the objective exam before getting behind the wheel for training?
- vision + vestibular stuff
- cognition
- UE strength/function
- neck ROM!!! (DMD, SCI)
- perception
- sensation
- coordination
- balance
- reaction time
* TRANSFERS
Why is it better to transfer into the seat than use your power chair?
Factory seat (transfer into seat) is safer than power chair
* can get an add on to allow seat to raise/lower for downhill transfers
* if you can transfer, preferred
can you drive from a scooter? what about power WC?
- cannot drive with scooter (unsafe)
- power WC that rise/lower are still unstable in vehicle but you can.
- manual WC: frames are not made for this –> put artificial back for support and HEAD REST –> rigidize the folding base (adds 10 lbs)
its easier to teach someone who knew how to drive before than someone brand new.
EXCEPT for using what?
LEFT FOOT ACCELERATOR
* pedal on left side
* brake in middle
* COGNITIVE (mm memory problem)
how long should it take to switch between accelerator and brake?
0.5-0.6 seconds
You can teach someone to press accelerator with left foot, brake with right foot. Why would you do this?
- sensation has to be normal (feedback is important)
- good for MS, other conditions where foot switching is slow
*if reaction time is SLOW/mvmt of foot is slow
What are visual field requirements for TEXAS?
If you have homonymous hemianopsia, can you drive?
140 degrees of uninterrupted visual field
*if you have 1 blind eye, you can meet this requirement (150 ish visual field)
*if you have homonymous hemianopsia, probably NO–> RARE if someone can compensate and qualify with good tracking
can drive within restrictions if u dont pass visual requirements
What test can you use to examine visual field deficits?
Humfrey field of vision test
*often HH looks like patches of deficits
What is the design copy test?
anecdotal test (no research evidence)
apraxia test: can you connect the dots to draw this shape?
part of the cognitive/perceptual assessment
Bells test is for…
of bells + time
visual neglect and hemispace affected
*scanning test (cross out every bell you see –> kinda like eye spy)
TIMED
What is the max score for Bell’s test?
max score 35
What indicates USN on the Bell’s test?
how long should it take?
USN (Unilateral spatial neglect): omission of 6 or more bells on the right or left half
*timed less than 5 minutes
what is the trail making test part A or B
connect all the circles in number order
*part B is also incorporating multitasking
TIMED
scoring for Trail A and B test
higher score = greater impairment
Trail A average: 29 seconds
Trail B average: 75 seconds
fail for A: over 78 seconds
fail for B: over 273 seconds
Do you need to check sign understanding?
What about map reading?
YES
YES –> do you have perspective to know where you are or how to get home? TOPIGRAPHICAL ORIENTATION IS SO IMPORTANT
*can you read the small print too?
How long should the sign identification test take?
timed test: 90 seconds or less
How long should map reading timed test take?
150 seconds or less
