Drug Classes Flashcards

1
Q

Beta Blockers

A

Beta Adrenergic Blocking Agents: Block the effects of epinephrine. Used to help control high blood pressure by slowing the heart rate and/or dilating veins and arteries.

Ex.Metoprolol, Labetalol, Atenolol, etc..

Q

Calcium Channel Blockers

A

Calcium Antagonists: Prevents calcium from entering the cell which slows the depolarizing (contracting) of the cell. Slows the heart rate and helps control irregular heart rate.

Ex: Diltiazem, Verapamil, etc..

Q

Sympathomimetics

A

Adrenergic Agonists: Mimic the effects of endogenous agonists (Catecholamines: Epi, Norepi, and Dopamine) on the sympathetic nervous system. Act on Alpha 1 or Beta 1 receptors by increasing norepinephrine. Increase the heart rate, force of contractions and blood pressure. Also acts on Beta 2 receptors which causes bronchiole dilation.

Ex. Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, Dopamine, Albuterol, etc..

Q

Anticholinergics

A

Blocks the action of acetylcholine. Inhibits the parasympathetic response of involuntary nerve impulses (Salivation, Digestion, Urination and Mucus secretion) and muscle movements (GI tract, Lungs and Urinary tract).

Ex. Atropine, Ipratropium

Glucocorticoids

A

Class of corticosteroids, has metabolic (glucose metabolism) and immunologic (expression of down regulating pro-inflammatory and up regulating anti-inflammatory proteins) effects.

Ex. Methylprednisolone, Dexamethasone, etc..

Q

Opioid Analgesics

A

Bind to opioid receptors in the brain and other parts of the body which blocks nerve pathways and changes the perception of pain.

Ex. Morphine, Codeine, Fentanyl, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, etc..

Benzodiazepines

A

Bind to receptors in the cerebral cortex and limbic system. Work as a sedative, anti-anxiety, muscle relaxant and anti-convulsant.

Q

ACE Inhibitors

A

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor. Relaxes Veins and arteries to help lower blood pressure by preventing the production of angiotensin II (which narrows the vessels).

Ex. Lisinopril, Captopril, etc..
