Drug Development Flashcards
(30 cards)
Pharmaco -kinetics
Fate of a drug -> dosing, drug interactions. (What the body does to a drug)
Pharmaco - dynamics
Action of a drug -> mechanism of action
(What a drug does to the body)
Pharmaco- therapeutics
Clinical use of drugs
Pharmaco-genetics
How genetics alter drug responses
Pharmaco -epidemiology
Effects of drugs on populations
Pharmaco -economics
Cost effectiveness of drug treatment
Toxicology
Study of the harmful effects of drugs and other substances
Example of Pharmaco -genetics
Pythagoras and fava beans are metabolized by G6PD
Contradictions
Situations or circumstances when a particular drug should not be used. (Aspirin in patients with bleeding disorders)
Natural drugs
Drugs made from natural resources such as (plants, venoms…)
Synthetic drugs
Chemically synthesized drugs. Often modeled after natural drugs (fentanyl is a synthetic morphine )
Biologics
Newest class of drugs. Vaccines, antibodies , growth factors , gene therapy
Compound
A chemical used for pharmacological purposes. (Prototype drug)
Pharmacologic tool
A pharmacologically active chemical used for experimental purposes
Selectivity
A selective drug affects only one target over the therapeutic range
Selective toxicity
Aim to kill the microorganism/ parasite/ unwanted cell (cancer) but leaves the host cells unharmed
ED50
Effective dose 50. ( median effective dose) 50% of patients experience a therapeutic effect
TD50
Toxic dose 50 (median toxic dose). 50% of patients experience toxic effects
Therapeutic window
The dosage range which can treat a disease effectively while staying within the safety range
Earliest records on the use of drugs
Egyptian medical papyrus 1600BC
China and India 2000BC
Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843)
German physician and founder of Homeopathy
First systematic and experimental approach to pharmacology
Chemical name
Generic name
Brand name
Chemical name : C8H9NO2
Generic name : acetaminophen
Brand name : Tylenol
Orphan drugs
Durga used for rare disorders (often not profitable for the pharmaceutical industry ). Status given by FDA
Patent protection
Once a company discovers a new drug they typically file a patent that gives them exclusive right for 20 years
Usually only have 10 years left on patent by the time drug is approved
