A

what is the normalisation thesis?
A
- argues that drug-use especially among youth- has become ‘normal’ in everyday life

what are the key signs of normalisation thesis
A
- the availability of drug use
- many young people trying them
- ongoing drug use is common
- young people being increasingly drug wise
- drug use is culturally accepted

what are the critiques of normalisation?
A
- shiner and measham argue how only a minority of youth use drugs and normalisation is not universal it depends on your social circle, race, gender and where you hang out
- drug taking of young people isn’t new. It’s just more visible now

what about student drug use?
A
- student use more drugs than the same-age non-students
- top-drugs they use are; alcohol, cannabis, ecstasy and Nitrus Oxide
- alcohol causes the most harm-accidents, poor academic performance, fights and hospitals visits

What does data from the Kent and Welsh Students show?
A
- 33.6% of kent students have used illegal drugs
- alchoal and cannabis are by far most common
- drug use often correlates with being male, frequent partier or in halls

A
- selling crime is the most reported offence among users

what are the prevention of substance-related
A
- limited success form punishment and education
- more effective, price controls, availability restrictions, marketing limitations and harm reduction (e.g. pill testing)
