MOA: blocks presynaptic 5HT3 receptors on sensory vagal fibers in gut wall
Drug Interactions: other QT prolonging medications (i.e. dronedarone, amidoarone, methadone)
Formulations: tablet, ODT, film, oral solution, IV, IM
Precautions: QT prolongation, EKG changes (Management: monitor EKG in patients w/electrolyte abnormalities, bradyarrhythmias, Congestive heart failure, concurrent QT prolonging medications)
CI: concomitant use with apomorphine
Special populations: Pg category B, severe hepatic impairment, max 8 mg/day
counseling points: treats nausea & vomiting, 8 mg/day for severe or refractory morning sickness
Monitoring: SE: headache, constipation, fatigue, malaise, contact Dr. if experience reduced HR, lightheadedness or passing out
patient ed: film: after opening pouch, immediately place film on top of tongue. dissolves in 4-20 seconds. once dissolves, swallow with or without water
ODT: do not push tablets through foil backing. With dry hands, peel back foil backing of 1 blister & gently remove tablet. Place ODT on top of tongue where it will dissolve in seconds, then swallow with saliva. Administration with liquid is not necessary
